Shūgyoku was a Zen Buddhist monk who drew the 59 pictures of chrysanthemum varieties that were reprinted in a picture book entitled Gagiku (Chrysanthemum Pictures). It was published in 1691. These pictures are shown here. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The shapes of the chrysanthemums were drawn accurately but the color was added later because full color printing was not possible in Japan when this book was first published.
